As a total body conditioning routine, Pilates classes are readily available at most gym and fitness centers. Pilates can be modified to meet almost every level of fitness. However, if your fitness goals include fat loss, you may be wondering if Pilates, specifically Aero Pilates, contributes to fat loss. Research indicates that Aero Pilates, as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle, can significantly contribute to fat loss in addition to overall body conditioning.
Conditioning Through Pilates
Pilates focuses on improving core strength, muscle control, increasing flexibility, coordination and body tone. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s, six core principles form the basis of this exercise program designed to build lean, long muscles. These principles include the following: centering, concentration, control, precision, breath and flow. Although you may be familiar with Pilates exercises on a mat, you also have the option of Pilates-specific workout machines, designed to increase the intensity of your workout.
Understanding the Aero Pilates Machine
The Aero Pilates machine is available in several versions, but all operate according to the same principle. The machines utilize basic Pilates movements but have you move back and forth on a rebounding machine. This increased movement elevates your heart rate and adds a cardiovascular component to your workout. The Aero Pilates machines are recommended for individuals who enjoy Pilates, but want to increase the intensity of their workouts by adding cardiovascular exercise. The manufacturers of Aero Pilates state that their machines offer similar fitness benefits as jumping on a trampoline but with fewer safety risks.
Aero Pilates for Fat Loss
Research indicates that Aero Pilates does effectively burn fat. In an eight-week study performed by Dr. Neil Wolkodoff, Medical Director at the Colorado Center for Health and Sport Science, participants at the center took part in approximately three sessions per week of 40 minutes each on the Aero Pilates machine. To determine the overall effects, researchers looked at body composition, muscle mass, fat mass and other relevant body measures before and after the study period. After the eight week period, the participants lost 5.1 pounds of total body weight. They also saw a decrease in total body fat, with an 11 percent decrease in total fat stores. These results demonstrate that Aero Pilates, when used regularly, promote fat loss at a significant level.
Decreased Blood Lipids
In addition to decreases in overall fat, a 2013 study published in the "Journal of Fitness Research" found that six weeks of Aero Pilates reduced levels of fat in the bloodstream. After participating in six weeks of exercise, the participants saw a 2.58 percent decrease in body fat and also significant decreases in cholesterol and triglycerides. These results demonstrated that using Aero Pilates shows marked improvements in physiological and blood biomarker levels. When combined with a healthy diet, Aero Pilates contributes to fat loss and also contributes to overall heart health.
